MY STORY
For more than a decade I have dedicated my career to advancing ocular surface disease care. I know the ins and outs by heart. But I’ve also learned money isn’t everything. I gain much more personal satisfaction by leveraging the same strategies I’ve used to improve my own patient outcomes and practice efficiencies for my colleagues, and applying them to help others find financial freedom as well as personal and professional fulfillment.
IT WAS AN EVOLUTION, BUT THE DEMAND WAS PALPABLE
I never dreamed I would be speaking in front of 4000 people.
After burning out and selling my private practice in 2009, a rep suggested that I would be a good speaker. Fortunately, a corporate executive took a chance on some newbies. Initially, I was a nervous wreck but I quickly became a road warrior, racking up nearly 200 flight segments in a year.
In my heart there was a dream to deliver something more. More value, more inspiration, more empowerment than expected.
In 2015 I was recruited to develop the Dry Eye Protocol for Vision Source. I took this very seriously and approached Oculus with a request to develop software for OSD analysis in order to provide docs with a better way to connect with their patients.
In 2017, over 4 hours of exhibit hall, and after 8 minutes on stage in front of 4000 people, they sold more than in the history of the company since 1895. This was one of the biggest highs of my life, because this had been my "baby." Fast forward 1 year and I realized how seemingly unsurmountable the challenge of implementation was for the average practice. It broke my heart.
From this, the Dry Eye Institute was born. I spent 6 months developing the adaptable resources needed to facilitate a 600 or 6000 sq ft practice, a 6 doctor or 6 location practice. The first DEI took place in February 2018 and we have not taken a break since.
Later in 2018, I was juggling the practice, the lecturing, and now DEI and I was beginning to burn out yet again. This is when I took out my "book of epiphanies" and wrote down, "What's the worst that could happen?" Next thing I knew I had removed the optical and comprehensive care from my practice to become an OSD referral center. Looking back, my practice now is certainly "far from routine," and this was the best practice decision I have ever made. (And by the way, I'm looking for an associate)
My passion and purpose is to help both doctors and patients have better outcomes and find fulfillment.
Maybe it's not perfect, but I have found my "ikigai."
